So on Friday January 16th, I was making my first annual colonoscopy appointment. The gastroenterologist was a new Dr for me here in Plano and did not yet have any of my records, CT’s, blood work or any cancer history. After I had set that appointment up I received a phone call from my oncologist in Arkansas. My CEA was up again to a 5. This was a concern to my oncologist and they wanted me to go ahead and see if the colonoscopy found anything then I needed to go to Arkansas and get another PET scan.
Well I sat on that for the weekend and became very nervous. On Monday morning I actually canceled a trip to London that I had this week and setup a colonoscopy on Wednesday with my previous gastroenterologist in Arkansas (who found my cancer to begin with) and setup a PET scan for the following day. That way I would get everything done this week and know if there was another cancer developing.
The colonoscopy was completely clean and the gastroenterologist even said that I didn’t have to get another one for another 3 years (although I will continue on my annual basis). The PET scan was also completely clean and my CEA was reduced to a 4.5. They said that although it is not common — sometimes the CEA’s can be elevated for a longer period of time after treatment. My oncologist said that he was not concerned and that he didn’t want to see me back for 3 months
So it was a rough week due to the worry. But great news that followed.
Well, I can officially mark 2008 down as a bad year. And look forward to fun in 2009. Hope everyone’s holiday season was fantastic.
Looking forward to 2009. As my boy Barney Stinson says — 2009 is going to be LEGEND….wait for it and I hope you are not lactose-intolerant because the second half of the word is….DARY!!!
